Christmas Update

By Kirk | December 22, 2009 at 8:46 pm

img_7391 Christmas is an exciting time of year. For some people it’s the absolute best; for others it’s quite the opposite. We’re all working our way through this year the best way we can, and Grant is doing his fair share of encouragement. Here’s a link to the latest slideshow of Christmas pictures.

Last night Grant told me quite the Christmas tale….”There once was a spooky house with no windows, only doors. It was spooky and haunted. There were witches, and goblins, and mummies, and creatures, and monsters. And they were all dressed up as…chickens. Grrrrr!” Couldn’t have told it better myself.

  2. Dear Kirk Family,

I am sure it will be a painful Christmas without your girls, but may I hope that their memory and your sweet little Grant will still make it a peaceful, happy Christmas with many more to come, and a New Year filled with healing, with joy, with good health, with beauty. God bless you all and help you feel His constant comfort,

    Much love,

  5. I can’t imagine the ache and the longing x2… my thoughts drift to you guys often. Praying there are blessings tucked in corners that find their ways to your hearts. And one day, b/c of the day we celebrate on Friday, we will ALL be reunited… can’t wait to see our Catie and your Mady again and to meet Ms. Annette…. Oh what a day….

  6. It’s so hard to understand why 2 perfect gifts were only given for such a short season. I am praying God will fill your hearts to overflowing with His love for you this Christmas. My heart still breaks each time I think of you all. Dear Lord, please fill them up with Your presence.

As I was singing “O Come All Ye Faithful” at church Sunday, it struck me that the line about “Sing all ye citizens of heaven above” includes my Daddy, my Grandparents, my In-Laws, several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Your precious girls are citizens of Heaven too, singing to the top of their voices with glory to God. How amazing it must be in Heaven on Christmas.

  8. Kirk, Natalie and Grant, I hope you manage to have a good Christmas despite the tough things this year has brought. I think of you often and pray for you. I think possibly Grant is another Linus. Linus always wanted to sing pumpkin carols. Next thing you know, Grant will be looking for the Great Pumpkin. Anyway, he’s adorable and quite the story teller. I can’t possibly think where that came from. Love you bunches, Melinda

  9. We too think of you often, offering little prayers, remembering your girls, and trying to imagine ways that we might offer comfort. Last night at our Christmas Eve service, our pastor offered a meditation on the names of Jesus, reminding us there are many. I hope that Comforter and Emmanuel are names that ring true with you, especially today.

I also offer this verse of O Come, O Come Emmanuel, which became my lifeline several Christmases ago before Eli was born when our second miscarriage that year came with the beginning of the Christmas season. That year the imagery of Advent and Jesus as a baby was just more than I thought I could stand much less the general expectation of being jolly. This carol let me be in a place that acknowledged that I wasn’t there yet, I didn’t feel God’s joyful presence that Christmas season, I was still waiting and hoping that I would again, but honestly at times I just wasn’t sure. I know it becomes tricky to project one person’s experience on another, but perhaps this song with it’s slightly mournful and longing tune that says I rejoice in the promise of what will come rather than in the reality I currently know will be helpful to you as well.

O Come, Thou, Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by thy Advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And Death’s dark shadows put to flight
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee,
    O Israel, Rejoice!

And for this reason and for the genuine smiles we see in the photos of you and Grant, we rejoice and say to all of you Merry Christmas.
